As I predicted, the old tank had a crack in the interior compartment that holds a reserve of gas, which made the car  run out of gas when on a hill or sharp curve. Factory tank was all metal casing, but the interior was plastic. Probably hit the gas tank on something which made the plastic crack.

Take off rear wheel for better access, then lower the exhaust in the back

Use a T-15 Torx bit to remove the 6 screws holding the grill to the car:

Old grill shows wear and tear:
New grill comes without  the emblems in place:
Buick emblem presses into place, then needs melted with a soldering iron from the other side to fuse in place:
Next, the large buick logo presses into the center of the grill, and also gets melted into place from behind:
Final grill, all done:
Time to fix the door hinge area
